PHULKARI & BAGHS

Phulkari - the richest art of the indian heritage which is the heart and beauty of the people of Punjab & Haryana. The Phulkari art adornes in all walks of life of the people of Punjab whose love for art and culture and preserving the traditions have helped to develop and blossom this art. Indians especially punjabis wherever they are in India or abroad, love their culture their roots, their love to expression of themselves. and preserving their identities through rich culture of arts and crafts in their traditional art wear with Phulkari wraps, shawls and suits.

The beautiful motifs depicting the colorful and vibrant punjabi in orange, red, green, golden of their high rich society and culture is interwoven with beautiful needlework into beautiful masterpieces called BAGHS. Their love to nature is depicted with the base of the fabric which is of natural cotton on which the intricate culture is woven.

Whether it is a marriage in the family welcoming the new bride or a newly born child in the family, the Baghs & Phulkaris grace the event as a symbol of welcoming the new member in the family.

PHULKARI & BAGHS were made in old days whenever the rich landlords of punjab had rich harvest and there was a marriage in the family in near future. The rich Jamindaars would give cotton, silken threads with bags of paddy & wheat to the artisans in the village who with his family would work day & night to make a beautiful BAGH which were unique. On completion of the work, the artisan was gifted with bountiful of Gold MOHURS in mark of thanks & reward. The bagh was laid on the bed of the newly married couple (on Suhagraat - the first night) The bagh was later on preserved in the trunks of the newly married as a sweet memory for herself and would adorn on special occasions rest of her life which she would gift it as heritage to her sons/daughters. The Baghs and phulkaris were preserved by the families for generations. The best part is that no two baghs were made similar to each other in the world. If it has been they are a rare piece.
